Early Summer Show: Tsuyoshi Higashijima, Yukari Suematsu

2025. 5.17 [sat] - 6.14 [sat] 11:00-18:00 (Saturdays -17:00) Closed on Sundays, Mondays and national holidays..

A mysterious sensation wells up and spreads, pulsing from deep within the viewing self. It is this feeling that draws us into the abstract paintings of Tsuyoshi Higashijima and Yukari Suematsu on a curiously liberating journey.

We will present new works by Tsuyoshi Higashijima in which light descends from the sky, including Infinite Sky, which he produced last summer. This exhibition also marks Yukari Suematsu’s debut at ARTCOURT Gallery.

Artist

Tsuyoshi Higashijima
Employing his own body as a barometer, Tsuyoshi Higashijima engages in an iterative, introspective dialogue between perceptional intuition and the language of painting, continually pursuing a painterly expression attuned to life itself. The dynamic yet elegant movement of his lines is grounded in the calligraphic sensitivity cultivated from his childhood through his youth. These lines traverse aural, semantic, and imagistic realms, modulated by the distinctive qualities of humidity and light that vary with Japan’s seasons. What emerges is Higashijima’s singular abstract style, which opens onto a new dimension of expression.

Yukari Suematsu
With touches of blurring and blotting, Yukari Suematsu delicately renders colors and forms that emerge through countless studies rooted in lived expereinces and emotions. She graduated from Tama Art University in 2010. In 2017, Suematsu received the Shell Art Award, Atsuhiko Shima Jury Award. In 2017-2021, she participated in artist-in-residence programs in Nagano, Niigata, and Finland. She held a solo exhibition at Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery in 2019. She also collaborated with Takashimaya on visual installations in their facilities in 2024. Suematsu continues to create opportunities to ‘experience’ abstract paintings across diverse settings.
