ARTCOURT Gallery is pleased to present that we will present the works of Tomoko Takagi (solo exhibition) at VOLTA NY 2016.
Takagi creates paintings that convey a strong awareness of the materiality of the paint. Realized with powerful yet delicate brushwork and a bright, transparent-feeling palette, her motifs resist easy categorization as representational or abstract, and express through comfortable strokes and a sense of multilayered-ness arising from the feeling of volume (mass) of the paint. “I am exploring the relationships of motif and image starting from a sense of doubt regarding what is perceived visually,” Takagi explains. “I am probing into the differences in recognition that waver at a work’s surface. In using actual things as motifs, I want those painted things to pass back and forth over the boundary between being recognized as a thing and being recognized as paint,
and I want to connect the appearance and sensibility of the combinations of materials and the textures of color.”
Artcourt Gallery is thrilled at the prospect of presenting Tomoko Takagi’s inquisitive paintings in New York City for the first time.
We look forward to seeing you in our booth at VOLTA NY 2016.
