Shiro Matsui: Forwards Backwards

2013.5.11 [sat] – 6.22 [sat] 11:00-19:00(Saturdays 11:00-17:00) Closed on Sundays, Mondays

Shiro Matsui (b. 1960) has always presented fresh and unexpected ideas of space. His works, that are produced with various materials and scales, reverse divided fields such as "interior/exterior" and "here/there," or partially connect and extend these fields. By realizing these spatial turnovers, connections and extensions through his/her own visual and physical experiences, the frameworks for usual recognition of viewers are swayed and expanded to a new plane.
In this upcoming solo exhibition, we presents a series of new works in which fluid materials such as water, goldfish and aquatic plants are combined into ceramic vessels with unique forms, arranging each piece as a "garden," that is a kind of device leads to a diversity of spatial recognitions by viewers, in the gallery.
By wandering inside of the space of a work, that equals to a "garden" and moving forward and backward among a series of "gardens," viewers' perceptions will opened toward intricate but fertile interrelations with the surrounding world.
