Hiroshi Mizuta divulges with deep sensitivity the indefinite, magical sensibilities and phenomena distortions that lie in everyday scenes and in the very acts of their viewing, and then develops these aspects into a world of boldly vivid color. Surfaces are painted to the point of overflowing with accumulations of colors and images that seem to jump out at the viewer. And within these surfaces, coexisting with the rawness of an act of Seeing that is unfettered by words and meanings, and not debilitated by theories of object recognition such as perspective and distancing, there are traces of a surreptitious intimacy between the landscapes and the artist himself through the very act of Seeing. The viewer’ s awareness is incorporated deeply within the beguiling camouflage of a single overlapped layer of interwoven colors and motifs, and one is left wandering after something that vanishes on the edges of one’ s vision even as it comes into focus. Unique relationships of landscapes and the artist’ s viewing of them are crystallized within an image-world that is suspended between the representational and the abstract, between floating and strain.
